California Civic Education Award Signed Into Law

AB 24, which establishes a State Seal of Civic Engagement for students, was signed into law this legislative session. The bill, authored by Assemblywoman Susan Eggman, is a win for those who care about civic education in California and want to see students rewarded for their efforts. The State Seal of Civic Engagement will be awarded "to pupils who have demonstrated excellence in civics education and participation and have demonstrated an understanding of the United States Constitution, the California Constitution, and the democratic system of government" (Link). California and Virginia are the only two states to have a law that acknowledges student achievement in civic education and involvement. The first awards will likely be handed out in 2021.
